Step aboard one of China's super fast new bullet trains departing from the gleaming Beijing South Train station and in under 4 hours you'll be in Nanjing, 'southern capital', as culturally rich and yet far less visited than its northern counterpart, Beijing. Nanjing's historical sites are certainly a vital key to gaining a deeper understanding of China. Take in the majestic views over the city from the top of Purple Mountain, walk in the footsteps of some of China's leaders from the 3rd to the 20th centuries and learn why this proud city on the Yangtze is one of China's hidden travel gems.

Given the abundance of water in this part of China, naval battles were a crucial form of combat. For 2000 years of imperial history the lake was the primary site for water borne military training.
