If you feel the need for a change of scene from Beijing, here's a quick getaway to some of China's other great cities. This five-day trip to Shanghai, Suzhou, and Xi'an offers you everything from a high-speed cosmopolitan style to the timeless peace of an ancient temple. Elegant gardens, beautiful canals, and fabulous shopping streets will tempt your senses (and your wallet!), while historical wonders like the Terracotta Warriors will excite your curiosity.

Travel Itinerary

  • Day 1:
    Beijing - Shanghai

Transfer to your hotel in Shanghai.
Start your trip with a serene visit to the beautiful Yuyuan Garden, a classical example of Ming Dynasty garden design.
Then, head to the Jade Buddha Temple, an active site of worship and home to a precious Buddha sculpted out of a single piece of white jade.
    Overnight in Shanghai

  • Day 2:
    Shanghai - Suzhou

In the morning, transfer via a short train ride to Suzhou, famous for its canals and gardens in the style of Southern China. The most intricate and exquisite of these, the Master of Nets Garden and the Lion Grove Garden, boast views that change with every bend in the path, and offer the perfect blend of rocks, water, and greenery. We will also see Suzhou's picturesque canals, which earned the city the name "The Venice of the East."
    Overnight in Suzhou

  • Day 3:
    Suzhou - Shanghai - Xi'an

In the morning, we will return to Shanghai by train.
The French Concession and the Xintiandi Shopping Area offer glimpses into both Shanghai's glamorous past and its equally glamorous present as a leader in style and commerce.
Getting to the airport is an experience in and of itself with the Maglev Train.
Flight to Xi'an and transfer to the hotel.
    Overnight in Xi'an

  • Day 4:
    Xi'an

After breakfast at the hotel, we will begin our tour at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built in the Tang Dynasty to store the Buddhist scriptures brought back from India by Xuan Zang (Tripitaka).
Next, see the highlight of Xi'an, the Terracotta Warriors. The soldiers, horses, and bronze chariots, though over 2000 years old, remain splendidly preserved and wonderfully lifelike.
At lunch, a local restaurant will demonstrate the art of noodle-making, a Shaanxi specialty.
Afterwards, visit the Great Mosque, one of the grandest in China, and admire its handwritten copy of the Qur'an.
A stroll in Xi'an's lively Muslim Quarter takes you past shops selling souvenirs, local specialties, and snacks.
    Overnight in Xi'an

  • Day 5:
    Xi'an - Beijing

Transfer to the airport for return flight to Beijing.
