Travel content

Located no more than 3 hours away from one another, the cities of Suzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou were once the heart of the historic Silk Road trade. In these three cities, you’ll find the grandeur of the past and evidence of cultural exchange with Europe as they exist alongside China in its most modern forms. Less bustling than the bright lights of Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou have the same metropolitan tradition as their larger neighbor. For its gardens and canals, Suzhou is known as ‘the Venice of the East’, and Marco Polo once described Hangzhou as “the finest and most splendid city in the world.” Both cities are home to rich cultural histories, local crafts and fine cuisine. You’ll see the best of what’s been preserved through the ages in these peaceful cities, and become familiar with the saying, “In heaven there is Paradise, on earth we have Suzhou and Hangzhou.” Then its on to Shanghai, the center of modern China. Like Suzhou and Hangzhou, Shanghai is a worldly and cultural city, but you’ll find a trip to Shanghai to be more about the glittering lights and nightlife than the serenity of the lakes. But to remind you that you’re not too far from Suzhou and Hangzhou, you’ll still have time to relax with a cup of coffee on the tree-lined boulevards of the French Concession.
