In the majestic vastness and inspiring solitude of land and sky, discover the enduring appeal of nomadic life where it is still lived authentically. Besides dipping into Mongolia's fascinating history, you will actually stay in 'ger' camps in traditional felt dwellings, while thrilling to the varied and breathtaking terrain around you.

Travel Itinerary

  • Day 1:
    Beijing/Shanghai – Ulaanbaatar (L, D)

    Flight from Beijing / Shanghai to Ulaanbaatar.

    Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to your hotel.

    Start the city tour with lunch.

    Then visit Sukhbaatar Square featuring statues of Damdin Sukhbaatar, the leader of Mongolia's 1921 revolution, Genghis Khan and his two generals, and other notable Mongolians.

    Gandan Monastery has about 150 monks in residence and houses a 26.5 meter statue of Migjid Janraisig, a Buddhist bodhisattvawith, made with 2,286 precious stones and gold leaf. Gandantegchinlen is its long name and means 'Great Place of Complete Joy'. It was established about 150 years ago as the main center of Buddhist learning in Mongolia.

    Zaisan Memorial, on a hill south of Ulaanbaatar, honors Soviet soldiers killed in World War II. A huge circular memorial painting depicts scenes of friendship between the peoples of the USSR and Mongolia.

    Then visit one of the following possible museum choices (the museums of Natural History, Bogd Khaan Winter Palace, Choijin Lama Temple or National History).

    Overnight in Ulaanbaator

  • Day 2:
    FlightUlaanbaatar – Bayangobi (B, L, D)

    After breakfast drive to Bayangobi, a unique combination of steppe, sand, and mountains.

    Arrive at No. 2 Zagal ger camp. A 'ger', also called a 'yurt', is a portable felt dwelling used by nomads all across the steppes of Central Asia.

    Local explorations in the afternoon. Dinner will be provided.

  • Day 3:
    Bayangobi – Karakorum (B, L D)

    After an early breakfast, drive to Karakorum.

    Visit Erdene Zuu, once one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia and almost destroyed in the 1930s.

    Tour of the monastery grounds and several chapels with excellent examples of Buddhist iconography dating from the 16th century.

    Visit to the ruins of Karakorum, the 13th century capital of the Mongol Empire. Return to Karakorum base camp for dinner.

    Overnight in Karakorum base camp

  • Day 4:
    Karakorum / Khustai National Park – Ulaanbaatar (B L D)

    After breakfast at the camp, drive to Khustai National Park where you can see the Takhi horse, the Asian wild horse better known as Prjevalski's horse, grazing in the pastureland.

    Continue driving to Ulaanbaatar.

    Overnight in Ulaanbaator

  • Day 5:
    Ulaanbaatar – Terelj National Park (B L D)

    Take a trip to Terelj National Park, famous for its alpine scenery and granite rock formations.

    En route, stop at the Turtle Rock.

    Arrive at ger camp in Terelj Valley.

    Enjoy time for local exploration and horse riding (available upon request).

    Overnight in the camp

  • Day 6:
    Terelj National Park – Ulaanbaatar (B L D)

    Drive back to Ulaanbaatar.

    Leisure time for shopping.

    Enjoy a Mongolian cultural performance before dinner.

    Overnight in Ulaanbaator

  • Day 7:
    Ulaanbaatar – Beijing / Shanghai (B)

    Transfer to the airport for your flight back to Beijing / Shanghai.
