Qinghai Province, in the far western reaches of China, combines the mystery of Tibetan Buddhism with the romanticism and adventure of the ancient Silk Road. Explore the vast beauty of this remote region and discover a wealth of fascinating religious and cultural heritage. Experience the tranquility of Qinghai Lake and visit the source of the mighty Yellow River at this sacred gateway to the Tibetan Plateau.

Travel Itinerary

  • Day 1:
    Beijing / Shanghai – Xining (D)
    • Take the flight to Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province.
    • Upon arrival, you will be met by your guide at the airport.
    • Visit Ta Er Monastery, known as Kumbum Monastery in Tibetan, it is acknowledged to be one of the six most important monasteries in the region and offers a good introduction to Tibetan culture for outsiders. Ta Er Monastery is famous for being the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Tibetan Buddhist Yellow Hat Sect.
    • Follow in the footsteps of the prostrating Tibetan pilgrims as you take a 20 minute walk around the monastery, also visit a local fortune teller.
    • Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.
    • Overnight in Xining
  • Day 2:
    Xining – Qinghai Lake – Xining (B L D)
    • After breakfast at the hotel visit Qinghai lake.
    • Qinghai Lake is the largest inland saltwater lake in China. Lying in the northeast of Qinghai Province, at 3,200 meters above sea level, the lake stretches endlessly into the horizon. It has an abundant supply of fish, which in turn attracts large flocks of birds including many migratory breeds. Major sights on or around the lake are: Bird Island, Haixi Hill, Sankuaishi (Three Stones), and Sand Island.
    • Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
    • Visit the Tibetan Medicine Museum in Xining and discover more about the culture and evolution of traditional Tibetan medicine.
    • Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.
    • Overnight in Xining
  • Day 3:
    Xining – Maduo (B L D)
    • After breakfast at the hotel, drive to Maduo to visit the source of the Yellow River.
    • Located 500km from Xining, Maduo literally means the "source of the Yellow River". At 4,200 meters it is one of the highest cities in the world and it used to be an important ferry on the ancient route to Tibet from Central China during the Tang Dynasty.
    • Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

  • Day 4:
    Maduo – Xining (B L D)
    • Breakfast at the hotel.
    • Drive to Xining via the home of the 10th Panchen Lama.
    • Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
    • Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.

  • Day 5:
    Xining – Ledu – Xining (B L D)
    • After breakfast at the hotel travel to Ledu to visit Qutan Monastery.
    • Qutan Monastery was built during the reign of Emperor Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty. Qutan Monastery is famous for its Ming-style buildings, precious relics, and valuable Ming and Qing (1644-1911) dynasty murals. It also resembles the Forbidden City in Beijing, with its chapels, halls, pavilions, gallery of murals, Buddhist pagodas, and drum towers scattered symmetrically on both sides of the axis. The mural gallery covers an area of 360 square meters and has an exceptional collection of painted murals, vividly depicting the life of Sakyamuni.
    • Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
    • After lunch visit the Neolithic museum in Liuwan. The museum is built on the ruins of the Liuwan tombs, a large burial ground for members of a primitive clan. It is China's largest painted pottery museum with a large collection of antique pieces dating back some 3,000 to 4,600 years ago.
    • Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.
    • Overnight in Xining
  • Day 6:
    Xining – Lijia Gorge (B L D)
    • Breakfast at the hotel.
    • Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Lijia gorge, and take a boating trip to Lijia forest park.
    • Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
    • Visit Achung Namdzong nunnery which is one of the most famous nunneries in the Amdo region of Tibet. Achung Namdzong is an important Nyingmapa (Red sect) monastery, built in 1814 and surrounded by beautiful red mountain peaks. The nunnery here houses 200 nuns and is said to have been built in the 13th century. Since then, the area has become a sacred place for Tibetan Buddhists. Lamas and monks flock here to study Buddhism and to meditate.
    • Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.
    • Overnight in Lijia Gorge    
  • Day 7:
    Xining – Lijia Gorge (B L D)
    • After breakfast at the hotel drive to Xunhua to visit the Gaizi Mosque.
    • Gaizi Mosque is the main mosque of China's Muslim Salar minority. It was built in the 2nd year of the Hongwu Period during the Ming Dynasty (1370) and was pulled down during the Cultural Revolution. It has recently been rebuilt in the style of Kashi Mosque in Xinjiang.
    • Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
    • Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.
    • Overnight in Xunhua
  • Day 8:
    Xunhua – Xining (B L)
    • After breakfast at the hotel travel back to Xining.
    • Enjoy half a day of free time to explore the ancient Silk Road city of Xining.

  • Day 9:
    Xining – Beijing / Shanghai (B)
    • Breakfast at the hotel
    • Transfer to the airport and fly back to Beijing / Shanghai
    • End of service
