Travel content

Try to imagine the highest skies and greatest vistas and you might be close to imagining Tibet. With a route that takes in the key Tibetan cities of Tsedang, Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyatse, the chance to explore the oldest and most revered temples and palaces, as well as individual touches such as enjoying tea with a local family, this Tibetan adventure lets you experience both the grand and personal sides of this magnificent region.

Travel Itinerary

  • Day 1:
    Arrive (D)
    • Arrive in Gonggar Airport
    • Meet your guide and transfer to Tsedang, the cradle of Tibetan civilization
    • Visit Yumbulakhang and Tramdruk Temple
    • Overnight in Tsedang
  • Day 2:
    Tesdang – Lhasa (B L D)
    • Visit Samye Monastery, the first monastery founded in Tibet in the 8th Century
    • After lunch, cross Tsangpo River by boat and continue to Lhasa
    • Overnight in Lhasa
  • Day 3:
    Lhasa (B L D)
    • Morning pilgrimage route around Potala Palace together with local people
    • Visit Potala Palace, the symbol of Lhasa
    • Visit Jokhang Temple, considered the most significant religious structure for all Tibetans, where many pilgrims pay homage to their faith each day
    • Explore Sera Monastery, a place for worship and the most famous academy in Tibet.
    • Overnight in Lhasa
  • Day 4:
    Lhasa (B L D)
    • Visit Drepung Monastery, one of the 'great three' Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet (the other two are Sera and Ganden)
    • Visit Norbulinka (the former summer residence of the Dalai Lama)
    • Explore a less-visited temple and print your own scripture
    • Overnight in Lhasa
  • Day 5:
    Lhasa – Yamdrok Tso Lake – Gyatse – Shigatse (B L D)
    • Drive to Yamdrok Tso Lake and walk around the holy lake
    • Drive to Gyatse, the town notable for its magnificent tiered Kumbum (literally, '100,000 images') of the Palcho Monastery
    • Visit Palcho Monastery and walk around in the small town
    • Drive to Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet (92km, 2.5 hours)
    • Overnight in Shigatse
  • Day 6:
    Shigatse – Lhasa (B L D)
    • Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the ancient residence of the Panchen Lama
    • Visit a local Tibetan's home to converse with the family members, gaining a more personal and grounded understanding of their daily life
    • Return to Lhasa (267km 6 hours)
    • Farewell dinner
    • Overnight in Lhasa
  • Day 7:
    Depart (B)
    • Transfer to the airport for your flight back home
    • End of service
