Travel content

A large city in its own right, Tianjin is often hailed as a more relaxed, fun-loving alternative to Beijing, with better cuisine and less traffic. Add to this the city's own attractions, and you have the perfect weekend getaway. Tianjin's historical sights encompass both its days as a foreign concession as well as older traditions of Chinese art. From the magnificent Shijia Family Courtyard to the stately British and Italian concessions, you'll discover two different styles of architecture for the wealthy. In fact, you'll get to experience Tianjin's past firsthand with a stay in the luxurious Astor Hotel which was built in 1863 by the British and once home to Sun Yat-sen and U.S. President Herbert Hoover.

Beijing departure: From RMB 2, 300 p.p.

Travel Itinerary

  • Day 1:
    Beijing - Tianjin (L)

In the morning, take the train by yourself to Tianjin. Our tour guide will meet you at the station's exit. Visit the former British concession, home to many grand colonial buildings. Lunch at a fine Chinese restaurant resembling a museum—all the rooms are furnished with genuine antiques and artifacts; it’s even called the Yuewei “Museum” Restaurant.

At the former Italian concession, you’ll see the largest group of Italian buildings in China, all beautifully ornate. Next, explore the Tianjin Folk Cultural Street, the Drum Tower, and the antique market. Check in at the Astor Hotel, one of the oldest in China and once host to famous historical figures.

  • Day 2:
    Tianjin - Beijing (B, L)

Breakfast at the hotel, then transfer to Yangliuqing, a suburb of Tianjin. The famous Shijia Family Courtyard is a magnificent example of a wealthy Ming and Qing Dynasty home. The many courtyards contain a fascinating collection of folk art and sculptures. Take the train back to Beijing after lunch.
