Travel content

Experience Kunming, a city where it's always spring, with intriguing sights along the way to the marvelous off-the-beaten-track area of Yuanyang. The Hani people there have sculpted the rolling mountainsides into a vast work of paddy-field art and, combined with colorful traditions, Yuanyang is a photographers' delight. In this newly-designated Heritage Site the terraced fields are integrated into the unique landforms of forests, valleys and streams. Though cultivated for 1300 years and an area of overwhelming scenic beauty, mass tourism has not developed yet because of its remoteness. The traditional town of Old Yuanyang is a Hani minority settlement atop a ridge at 1570 meters. The vast majority of the ethnic minority women in the county (Hani, Yi, Dai, Zhuang, Miao and Yao) still wear traditional clothes as their daily attire and especially on vibrant market days. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit the Yuanyang rice terraces.
